Event Details

About the Presentation:
Gifted children are complex, and each child is their own unique puzzle. To help see each individual piece of a child as well as the entire puzzle, parents must often advocate on behalf of their gifted child. When should you advocate? How should you advocate to ensure you are heard and understood? What are your options if you feel like you’ve exhausted your options? Session participants will explore these questions and more with the end goal of building an advocacy toolkit to support and sustain positive, child-focused advocacy and collaboration.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Colleen Urlik’s life revolves around giftedness and the specialized instruction gifted learners require. She began in education as a classroom teacher, where she quickly discovered her passion for gifted learners through working with them within her classroom and in the school as the GT Building Coordinator. She now holds a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with a Specialization in Gifted Education from the University of Denver. Dr. Urlik is the President Elect for the Colorado Association for the Gifted and Talented, Colorado’s statewide advocacy and education group and the state affiliate for the National Association for Gifted Children, and is the Principal at Hulstrom K-8, Adam 12 Five Star School District’s magnet school for advanced and gifted education. She is also the mother of two gifted children and loves nothing more than exploring and adventuring through the world with them and her husband.
